A Curse of Shadows and Ice Read Along — Week One Discussion & Thoughts

Introduction

Welcome to the first week of our A Curse of Shadows and Ice read along! Even though this romantasy is shorter, I don’t feel cheated by the lack of “bulk.” As an editor, I love long books only when every ounce of content matters, and Catharina Maura is hitting a great stride for readers like me.

Fast-Paced Fantasy Romance (Without Missing Worldbuilding)

Not even 80 pages in, and so much has happened for Arabella. I’ll admit to whiplash—things move quickly—but I’m okay with that. We aren’t bogged down in heavy exposition or unnecessary backstory because the plot doesn’t demand it.

We get direct ties to Beauty and the Beast. It’s familiar enough to ground the world, but fresh enough to feel new. Maura uses the original story as scaffolding to build something lush and intriguing without info-dumping.

Perpetual Darkness, Consequences, and Conflict

I love that the kingdom exists in perpetual darkness—and that it matters. The curse affects not just ambiance, but the politics, people, and relationships. The Emperor invades to keep his people alive. The citizens adapt. The stakes are built organically, and the consequences drive the plot forward.

I’m digging it.

Romance Chemistry That Works

The attraction between Felix and Arabella is instant, and I appreciate it. She doesn’t understand it at first, but it allows for a natural, layered progression of intimacy. She sees him as a monster in the beginning, but by the end of our first section, she’s the one questioning her humanity.

Felix is gentle even as he punishes her for stabbing him in the heart. His blood doesn’t poison her—love that detail. Her curse is fire—also a great connection. And the way he claims and protects her when no one else ever has? Yes, please.

Character Concerns and What’s Ahead

Now, Nathaniel. He feels like a plot device—functioning, yes, but maybe at the expense of Arabella’s agency. There are repeated mentions of women having no rights, and of her not having control over herself, and I’m expecting this to become a major theme.

I’m looking forward to the moment she both challenges inequality and chooses vulnerability as she falls in love.

A Minor Tension Dip?

Everyone feels a little too “nice” right now. It can flatten emotional tension, but because the pacing is fast, it’s not hurting the plot—at least not yet.

The comment from Elaine (Felix’s second in command) about knowing what it’s like to give up someone you love has me suspicious she might be in love with Felix, especially with how he cupped her face in the first chapter. I hope I’m wrong because that complication is one of my least favorite character dynamics.

What Do You Think?

Let me know your thoughts in the comments! I’m curious:

  • Are you loving the pacing or wanting more world-building?

  • Thoughts on Felix and Arabella’s early chemistry?

  • Do you think Elaine’s feelings will complicate things?

We’ll pick up again next week as we read to Chapter 30. Until then, happy reading!
