A Curse of Shadows and Ice Read Along—Week Three: Tension & the Breaking Point

Welcome to Week Three of our A Curse of Shadows and Ice read along by Catharina Maura. We’re officially in the deep end now, and I’m in a full reading frenzy. Let’s talk about why.

The Threat of Home & What It Represents

The biggest theme emerging in this section—outside of the romance—is the threat of home. Arabella’s former life looms over everything: Nathaniel, her sister, and her desire to run from what she’s building with Felix.

What makes this section work so well is that Arabella is no longer just surviving in Felix’s world—she’s claiming it. His palace. His people. Felix himself. It’s a beautiful payoff for the slow build we’ve had through the first half of the book.

Until, of course, it starts to tear them apart.

Her sister’s letters being the only thing keeping her grounded? Felix assuming Nathaniel—not her family—is what she’s missing? That misunderstanding creates emotional distance at exactly the wrong moment.

So when they finally begin to succeed, Felix prepares to let her go…while Arabella is preparing to ask him to come with her.

Dual POV Done Right

This is where the dual POV shines. We know they love each other. We can see the truth clearly—while they can’t. It’s an excellent way to build tension, and it hurts in the best way.

Ending this section with Felix pulling back—growing cold, rejecting her—absolutely sucks. But narratively? I get it. I hate it. But I get it.

Where the Story Stumbles

The creature Felix becomes, though? That reveal felt late. Almost like an afterthought. Maura has layered everything else so carefully, so beyond the dark veins on his skin, I wanted more groundwork here—especially since this transformation is what finally drives him away from Arabella.

The trip accelerating his descent didn’t quite land for me either. I needed more setup.

That, combined with some continuity and editing issues, had me asking: How am I still this invested? Because I am.

The Editor Brain Kicks In

Let’s talk about a few things my editor brain tripped over:

  • Felix wondering what she feels like under him after they’ve already slept together.

  • Arabella closing her eyes and somehow seeing him grin in the very next sentence.

  • Repeated phrasing and doubled descriptions stacked too closely.

These are big red-pen moments. Where was the editor on this pass?

Some of the longer dialogue stretches—especially with Elaine discussing her betrothed—also dragged. The emotional weight was there, but it needed tightening. It almost landed. Almost.

What Keeps Me Hooked

And yet…here I am.

The hope Maura builds around Arabella’s powers—the change she could bring to the kingdom, the curse, and the people—is genuinely compelling. Pairing that with Arabella’s insecurities? Beautifully done.

The emotional push-and-pull between Felix and Arabella remains the juiciest part of the book. Will she go home? Will he fully become the monster he fears? Will she realize she doesn’t want Nathaniel and go back to save Felix?

That’s what I’m hoping for—but I’m always open to a good surprise.

Let me know your predictions in the comments as we head into the final stretch. We’ll wrap up A Curse of Shadows and Ice by Catharina Maura in next week’s update.

Until then, happy reading!
