Mistaken: A Cursed Town Built on Superstition and Sacrifice

The town of Mistaken (what a perfect name!) feels cursed from the start — a community built on superstition, sacrifice, and the dangerous forces that rule their borders. The way Craig describes the landscape, the barrier stones, and the eerie forests pulls you in until you feel as trapped as the townsfolk themselves.

This setup reads like a historical dystopian horror, filled with sacrifices, reapings, and hunts that churn the stomach and quicken the pulse. I’m deeply invested in Greer, Ellis, and Louise — especially Greer, whose fierce independence clashes against a world where her fate seems already written.

Her father’s threats and Lachlan’s claim on her made my blood boil. Let her be in love! I always hate when women’s choices are dictated by others, especially men who believe they own her — and clearly, that’s the point here.

But what is all this leading to? I can’t even guess, and that unpredictability makes the tension even sharper.

The Hunt, the Bright-Eyed, and the Dread That Never Lets Go

The threat of the hunt carries that classic backwoods horror vibe — primal, cold, and brimming with unease. My mind keeps racing:

  • What if Ellis isn’t the one to catch her?

  • Will her father betray her?

  • Are the Bright-Eyed vampires, or something older and far worse?

Greer’s ability to hear everything except the voices of the creatures beyond the barrier gave me chills. And those two-toed figures calling her “Starling” — terrifying.

I love the ancient-myth feel of the Bright-Eyed, who remind me of old-world vampire and shapeshifter legends — hungry, inhuman, and bound to blood. Combine that with cursed trees, strange stones, and boundaries that kill…and we’ve got a world that feels alive, hostile, and sacred all at once.

The mystery around Greer’s mother and her possible connection to these beings has me hooked. Every chapter deepens the sense of foreboding, and I can’t shake the feeling that the Reaping will change everything. Will Ellis survive? Will Greer escape the stones?
