A Land So Wide Read Along Week Three: Secrets, Betrayal, and the Bright-Eyed Queen

A Land So Wide Read Along: Week Three Recap

Welcome back to our A Land So Wide read along by Erin A. Craig—and holy cow, y’all. Holy cow.

This week’s chapters were intense, emotional, and full of revelations that had me alternately cheering and yelling at my book. If you thought Mistaken couldn’t get darker, think again.

Greer’s Journey and the Weight of Survival

I’ll admit, some of the traveling alone scenes felt a little long—especially the two river fights—but I get it. The first proved Greer’s strength and independence; the second reminded us that even the strongest heroines sometimes need saving. And that’s where Finn comes in.

Her encounter with the Bright-Eyed who attacked her—and how she fended it off with her scream—was perfection. The terror, the chaos, the reveal of who that creature actually was? Chills. The forsaken queen who declared herself in selfish haste? I’m ready to hate her.

The Complicated Truth About Finn and Ellis

I want to hate Finn, but after getting his POV, I just can’t. And while my heart still belongs to Ellis, Erin A. Craig is doing her best to make me question everything.

I know I want Greer to be happy, but I don’t want her forced to choose between Finn and Ellis. It’s giving me major dread—and not in the good, spooky way. Mostly because I’m terrified it means Ellis is going to die, and that’s one of my biggest story pet peeves.

As a writer, I get it: her love for Ellis set her on this journey. But does that mean she’s meant to end up with Finn simply because her mother promised it? Why can’t she just follow her heart? Argh!

The Bright-Eyed, the Queen, and the Truth

So now we know: Greer is one of the Bright-Eyeds. Her mother was their queen—and now, Greer must take her place. The clues were there all along: her scream, her hearing, her connection to the Benevolence. It’s all finally coming together.

But what happened to her cloak? Did her father destroy it? Did he know the truth all along? Or worse—did he kill her mother to hide it? So many questions, and I’m desperate for answers.

The Final Stretch

Despite my frustrations (and pirate noises 🏴‍☠️), I’m really happy with how the story’s progressing. It’s emotional, unsettling, and powerful—exactly what good gothic fantasy should be.

We’re down to the final stretch, and next week we’ll finish A Land So Wide and unpack everything that happens. You ready for it?

Until then, happy reading!
