Hello, lovely readers!
We’re back with our April pick for ILVN’s 2023 Reading Challenge!
And we’ve chosen a book that goes with this month’s theme—the hunt—which is certainly featured in The Umbra King by Jamie Applegate Hunter:
The morally grey don’t want redemption. They want retribution.
After the brutal murder of her twin sister, Aurora “Rory” Raven spends years forging herself into a ruthless vigilante killer.
She never gave up her search for the man who killed her sister, but when she is convicted of thirteen murders and sentenced to five-hundred years in Vincula, the prison realm, she knows her sister’s death will never be avenged.
After arriving in Vincula, Aurora discovers her opportunity for retribution is closer than she thought.
Caius is the notorious Umbra King, ruler of Vincula, King of the Monsters, and the thing nightmares are made of. After being locked in his own realm for a crime he didn’t commit, his only focus has been revenge.
But when Aurora drops into his throne room, representing everything he despises, they begin a game of cat and mouse, and before long, their hatred turns into something else.
Circumstances draw them together, but revenge might tear them apart.
Our female protagonist, Aurora, has one hell of a vendetta and an attitude to go along with it, which means this should be a whole lot of fun.
And since I am a fan of the broken man character, Caius’s situation sounds super promising. I can’t wait to see how his story evolves.
My prediction? These two will go be at each other’s throats until—and probably during—they need each other to survive. And I’m hoping that brings on all of the sparks.
As planned, this book also fits several of the prompts we have left: magic, dark, and indie author.
Let’s fill in our dark graphic because the cover certainly fits, and that description promises some deeply dark themes, scenes, and emotions.
We hope you’re as excited about our choice for April as we are, and we will be discussing The Umbra King as our April ILVN Book Club pick! So remember to set yourself a reminder for Saturday, April 29th at 1pm CST, to come join our discussion.
