We are happy to bring you this excerpt from the latest novel by V.E. Huntley, The BloodStone Legacy: Damnation.
Set in a dystopian world five hundred years in the future, where vampires rule and humans are slaves, The BloodStone Legacy is a hauntingly sensual story of forbidden love, heart-wrenching choices, sacrifice, and redemption in a world consumed by darkness.
Aden barely registered Kane’s presence outside the door as he approached his guest suite.
He’d left Kane behind tonight, not wanting to be shadowed.
The door to his suite opened, and the scent hit Aden like a freight train. There was a human
female in his room and her scent was mouthwatering.
He walked around the corner to find her leaning over the raised antique platform bed,
smoothing the sheet. The previous day’s bloody sheets lay in a pile on the floor at her feet.
Waves of dark chestnut hair piled on top of her head in a messy bun, revealing the graceful curve
of her neck. Aden’s throat tightened as he swallowed, his fangs lengthening at the sight of her
flawless, unblemished skin. He took a deep breath, inhaling her intoxicating, overwhelming
scent. Its mixture of honeysuckle and jasmine hijacked the entire room.
She was pure, untainted, a virgin in every sense, and venom pooled in his mouth. She
turned to grab the pillow and jumped when she saw him.
“Oh!” The girl lifted her hand to her throat even as she dropped her head. “I’m sorry, Sir,”
she said before regaining her composure. “I'll be out of your way in a minute.”
She whirled back to the bed to resume her task. Unable to tear his eyes away from her,
Aden walked toward her, his eyes devouring every inch of her.
She was petite, at least a foot shorter than his six-foot-five frame. Her heart-shaped face
narrowed at the bottom, giving her a mature appearance, yet her full mouth and the cleft above
her upper lip gave her a youthful air. He couldn’t see her eyes but a set of full, bushy eyebrows
hovered over them, the left arching slightly higher than the right. Her cheek bore several deep
scratches, leaving him curious about their cause.
She couldn’t be much older than twenty and although overall she was rather plain, there
was a captivating allure about her that took his breath away. It irritated him.
Aden enjoyed the sight of beautiful women, and while all of his thralls were attractive, they
were nothing compared to female vampires. But this small slip of a girl—a human girl at
that—was stunning in her simplicity.
Aden continued to circle her and a wary expression crossed her face as she registered his
movement. But she didn’t cringe away the way most thralls did in his presence. Her actions, or
lack thereof, intrigued him. In less than a minute, she stunned, irritated, and intrigued him. Not
an easy feat.
Aden took a deep breath, his nostrils flaring as her intoxicating scent filled his lungs. “A
vampire has never drunk from you?” The question slipped out before he could catch himself.
Her body froze. “No, Sir,” she said with a slow shake of her head.
“Why not?”
“Master Matthais forbids it.”
Interesting. Matthais wanted her for himself, which meant she was off limits. Even though
she wasn’t his usual type, he couldn’t help the subtle pang of disappointment coursing through
him. But Matthais’ claim on her didn’t mean Aden couldn’t have a bit of fun.
“Turn around.”
Her eyes closed and her heart thumped wildly in her chest. Fear emanated from her pores,
but she turned toward him, bending to pick up the bloody sheets, keeping her head bowed as she
stood.
“How old are you?”
“Twenty-two, Sir.”
She was four years beyond the acceptable age for a human girl to become a pet and it
baffled him that Matthais hadn’t taken her yet.
“What’s your name?”
“Ellie, Sir.”
“Light.” Her brow furrowed, and his lips curved into a bemused smile. “Your name means
light.” He cocked his head to the side. “Ironic, considering you’re destined to live in a dome city
shrouded in perpetual darkness.”
But she wouldn’t know that. Humans weren’t educated; ignorance kept them docile.
“Your bed is ready, Sir. May I go?”
A subtle shift in Ellie’s scent, now a blend of trepidation and embarrassment, made him
want to consume her whole. He moved closer and leaned his head down toward the crook of her
neck. He breathed deep, filling his lungs with her scent again and she gasped, stepping back,
clutching the sheets to her chest. Her head whipped up and she looked at him, wide-eyed.
Aden’s cocky smirk faded when he saw her eyes. Eyes that had haunted him for almost
three centuries. Pain ripped through his chest, stealing his breath and making his knees want to
buckle.
“Who are you?”
She stood motionless, shoulders tight, her face turning ashen. Her eyes scanned his face
before meeting his once more. She inhaled a startled breath before dropping her eyes to the floor
again.
“Who are you?” He grabbed her arms and yanked her body toward him, shaking her slight
frame.
“Ellie, Sir,” she squeaked as she stared at his chest. Aden’s fangs lengthened and his eyes
turned red as he tugged her closer. Ellie’s eyes snapped back up to his face, wide and brimming
with fear.
“Please.”
Her soft plea and the fear in her eyes, fear he’d seen in eyes identical to those once before,
jolted Aden back to reality. He shoved her away, and she stumbled over the sheets, smacking her
face against the marble floor.
“Get out!” Aden thundered as he reeled away, his fingers curling in on themselves as his
nails dug into his palms. He heard her feet scurrying and the door to his room slide closed before
he spun back to where she’d been standing. A small smear of blood marred the otherwise pristine
floor.
Anger and agony tore through him and he roared, reaching down and flinging the bed, with
its extravagant frame and headboard, through the wall.
