Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil Read Along – Week Four Wrap-Up & Reflections

Welcome to Week Four of Our Read Along!

We’ve reached the final pages of Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab, and I’m absolutely floored—in the best, most vampire-bitten way.

Let’s get into the chaos, grief, and genius of this finale.

Sabine’s Tragic Spiral

We’ve seen it coming for a while—Sabine’s descent into darkness. By Week Four, her moral gray zone becomes fully red. Her violence escalates, and the moment she kills a young girl while bringing Charlotte “home,” everything shifts. Her fate is sealed. So is Charlotte’s heartbreak.

This is the real beginning of their end.

Promises, Lore, and Foreshadowing

Remember that promise Sabine forced out of Charlotte? That she’d never hurt her? Yeah, that bites back hard. Charlotte tries to kill her and can’t. The curse works.

It’s a perfect setup for Alice’s incredible moment—using poisoned blood, betrayal, and lore to take Sabine down. The callback to the dirt necklace? Masterfully done.

Alice’s Transformation

Alice’s arc is the soul of this story. The grief she endures—losing Catty, killing Sabine, becoming something entirely new—is bittersweet and poetic. Her revenge against Lottie? Cold, necessary, and maybe even merciful.

The final scenes, including her father’s phone call and touching on why she made the trip to Boston, show us a new Alice—one who has lived, lost, and chosen to keep going. It’s layered and luminous.

Themes That Resonate

V.E. Schwab weaves feminist commentary, trauma, identity, and queerness into vampire myth like no other. This book is about:

  • Women carving space in a world that tries to contain them.

  • Love that transforms (sometimes painfully).

  • The cost of power and immortality.

  • Death as a doorway, not an end.

Final Thoughts

I loved how Schwab left space for us to imagine Alice’s next steps. No neat bow. Just an open door. And I love open doors.

🧛 So, what did you think? Did Alice’s ending satisfy you? Were you rooting for Sabine despite her spiral? Drop a comment below and let’s discuss!
