Welcome back to Week Two of our fantasy romance read along for Brigette Knightley’s The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy! If you love slow burn enemies-to-lovers, snarky banter, and characters who can’t decide whether to kiss or kill each other, you’re in the right place.
This is the featured book from our July Bite Me Box—and we’re already halfway through the tension, chaos, and conspiracies.
If you want to join our one of our next read alongs, don’t miss A Land So Wide by Erin A. Craig in our September Bite Me Box—grab your box here before it sells out!
Banter, Snark, and Just a Hint of Softness
The banter between Aurienne and Osric continues in full force this week—and I’m living for it. These two are ridiculous in the best possible way. Whether it’s snarky insults or wildly specific fantasy-world terms I can’t pronounce, their verbal sparring is pure entertainment.
But to give credit where it’s due, there’s growth happening beneath all the sass. The characters are developing—slowly, grudgingly, but noticeably.
We also had some heavier moments this week:
-
Dead intruders found in the mix.
-
A tense, almost tender scene between Aurienne and a young patient.
-
Osric fearing his power may be gone for good.
And through it all, Knightley’s side characters shine. They’re vivid, silly, and utterly unforgettable—especially Xanthe, Aurienne’s 200-year-old mentor. Saucy, maniacal, and totally the kind of person (or immortal?) my inner Italian grandmother would adore.
Romance in the Shadows of Conspiracy
Aurienne and Osric are noticing each other more now, but they’re both determined to fight those instincts. That’s the beauty of this slow burn—it simmers without giving us the payoff too soon.
Meanwhile, the stakes are climbing.
-
Who invaded the academic hospital of the Haelan?
-
Why is funding so scarce for the deadly outbreak killing 25% of infected children—especially when the victims are all poor?
-
How will Osric’s coerced investigation bring him closer to Aurienne?
And that ending? Brutal. Our leads are trapped together on a lighthouse balcony, holding hands as the sun itself goes dark. Is this the moment of change—or another crushing setback? I genuinely have no idea, but I cannot wait to find out.
Next Week’s Reading
We’ll be covering Chapter 11 through Chapter 17 (ending on page 281) next week. Drop your predictions in the comments—what’s really going on in the Haelan? Will Osric and Aurienne finally work together, or will their stubbornness win?
Check out the vlog for this week’s read along here!
And if you haven’t yet, grab your September Bite Me Box here so you can join our upcoming A Land So Wide read along with all the exclusive fantasy romance goodies.
