Welcome back to our Gifted & Talented Read Along! Week Four has brought jaw-dropping revelations, emotional devastation, and one seriously satisfying character exit.
Spoilers ahead for this section of Gifted & Talented by Olivie Blake!
Dzhuliya’s Secret Revealed
Can we take a moment to celebrate a correct prediction? I knew Dzhuliya’s baby belonged to the elder Wren, and Eilidh’s reaction—“Don’t touch me, father fucker!”—was equal parts painful and powerful. It perfectly mirrors the raw, unfiltered emotional charge Blake’s characters are famous for.
It also speaks volumes about family trauma and toxic dynamics in this book. Dzhuliya, who knew the truth, chose not to tell Eilidh—another selfish, heartbreaking move in a long line of them.
Everything’s on Fire… Literally and Emotionally
This week’s reading ends with fire. With Arthur’s death (again). And with Monster desperately trying to sound the alarm.
Meanwhile, Eilidh finally confronts Meredith, asking the question at the heart of so many sibling rifts: “Why couldn’t you just love me?”
It’s devastating. Because while Arthur and Meredith had each other, Eilidh had no one—not even a mother. Just a father who loved her possessively, not genuinely.
Jamie, Meredith, and the Pain of Wanting
Jamie and Meredith…whew. They slept together. Again.
And it’s messy, emotional, and exactly the kind of addictive angst I crave in a book like this.
I still like Cass, don’t get me wrong. He’s the safe option. But this is fiction, and I want the kind of relationship that might ruin you if you let it slip away.
Phillipa’s Lies and Death
Let’s just say it: good riddance. Faking a pregnancy? Trying to entrap Arthur? Phillipa’s death might be one of the most cathartic scenes in the book. And now that she’s gone, I’m hopeful we’ll see more from Arthur, Gillian, and Yves. That triad has potential—romantically and narratively.
Lou as Narrator and the Mystery of Her Son
Lou is clearly our narrator now, and I love the insight she gives into the characters—especially her son. I’m dying to know who the father is. The drawings hint at someone fairer-skinned than her, but Blake gives us so little to go on.
So… What’s Next?
Now that:
-
Meredith is in charge of a crumbling empire
-
Eilidh’s grief has unleashed literal plagues
-
Jamie’s article could change everything
-
And Arthur, Gillian, and Yves are on the brink of something new…
I can’t wait to finish this book next week. Olivie Blake really delivers on emotional chaos.
