Heir of Illusion Read Along Week 4 (Final): Ending Explained + Theories

Welcome back to our final week of the Heir of Illusion read along by Madeline Taylor…and oh my God.

What just happened?!

I get to blissfully say: I WAS WRONG.

There’s only one time I truly enjoy basking in being wrong—and that’s when I’m reading a book. The thrill of a twist actually landing? Unmatched.

Because here’s the thing: I read a lot. I taught reading analysis at a university for nearly a decade, I’ve been an editor for fifteen years, and I curate and write books for a living.

This is my world.

And I’m rarely wrong.

Which is why the ending of Heir of Illusion hit so hard.

I’m still jittery from the way this book ended, and I need book two immediately.

Like…right now.

Heir of Illusion Ending Breakdown

Let’s talk about that ending—because we have to.

After the final battle…
After Ivy dies to save Thorne…
After she wakes up again…

Why is Thorne suddenly so cold?

From the bonus material, we know he knew who she was—knew she was an heir. But did he think she was the Heir of Illusion, not the Heir of Death?

And what does that mean for everything we thought we knew?

The Baylor Twist (And Why It Works)

Let’s address the moment that absolutely wrecked me:

Baylor is the rightful heir.

I was not prepared.

The twist works because all the clues were there. The misdirection? Flawless. The red herrings? Painfully convincing.

And now the bigger question:

Why did Baylor keep Ivy alive?

Did he always know she was an heir, too? Because if anyone could hide that kind of truth, it would be the actual Heir of Illusion.

Theories: Ivy, Death, and Illusions

Now we have to ask:

Why is Ivy so good at illusions?

The death connection was right in front of us the entire time—from the moment she clawed her way out of her grave after her father drowned her.

So where do illusion and death intersect?

And what is she really becoming?

Thorne, Fate, and What Comes Next

We also can’t ignore this:

Thorne is fated to do something.

Is it to kill her?

Or is it something else entirely?

I’m still holding onto the possibility of a deeper bond (you know the one), but either way…this is going to hurt before it heals.

Side Characters That Hurt Us (In the Best Way)

We need to talk about the emotional damage:

  • Callum – Knowing he was speaking to her all along, only to die saving her? Brutal. Beautiful. Bittersweet.

  • Remy – Succumbing to the whispers… I’m not hopeful, and that makes it worse.

  • Clyde – Immediate enemy. Immediate problem. And yes, I need to see him humbled.

That Final Turning Point

One of my favorite moments:

Ivy killing Kaldar after learning he murdered the queen.

That was the shift.

The moment she breaks. The moment she steps into something darker. The moment she starts pushing back against the king.

Final Thoughts on Heir of Illusion

There is so much more we could unpack in this Heir of Illusion read along finale—so many layers, small details, and hidden clues—but we’d be here forever.

And honestly?

That’s the mark of a great fantasy read.
