Excerpt from Horrified – Chapter 21

Myra twisted around. Her tongue darted out, moistening the split in her lower lip.
“I don’t understand.”
“You have a gift, my dear, and if you let me help you develop it, you will never fear anyone
again.” He smiled and glanced at the window as the car passed beneath an iron archway,
emblazoned with the words ‘Briar Glen.’
“What is this place?” Myra whispered as a prickly feeling crawled across the back of her
neck. She shrank into the seat.
“It’s a hospital for people who have experienced something they can’t explain, and the result
of that experience was the death of another person.” He made no effort to comfort the fears
tumbling around in her mind, falling silent as the car parked beside a stone staircase. A woman
with long brown hair appeared at the top. “Jenny will help you settle in this evening. She, too,
came to stay with me after a Halloween incident. Like you, she has a gift—”

“Did I kill my aunt?” Myra voiced the question that had been plaguing her since she
discovered the gruesome scene.

He sighed as if disturbed she’d asked the question, yet relieved.
“Yes, you did.”
Her door ripped open, and the woman stuck her head into the car. Her long braids, twinned
with orange yarn, brushed over Myra’s arm.
“Oh! She’s young. What are you, honey? Eight? Nine?” When Myra nodded, she stuck out
her hand. “I’m Jenny, Dr. Jack’s right-hand woman. I assist with unusual cases.” Her eyes
flicked to Myra. “You must be special if Dr. Jack personally collected you. Who are you?”
“She’s my niece,” Dr. Jack replied and climbed from the car. “Put her in the room beside
Jill.”
Jenny pouted and pulled her head from the car. “Why not me?”
“Because you and Walker are loud.”
A giggle followed his comment. Before Myra could react, Jenny wrapped her fingers around
Myra’s wrist and yanked her from the car. Winding an arm around Myra’s waist, she led her up
the stairs toward what could only be described as a giant castle, her bright voice echoing in the
stone courtyard.
“When I came to live with Dr. Jack, I was accused of murdering my sister and roommates.
You only killed one beastly aunt…”

Interview With Alyssa Drake

Q: Hi Alyssa! Tell us about your publishing journey. Did you always want to be an author?

AD: I’ve been writing since I was young. My mother’s best friend was a writer, and I found the idea of creating worlds intriguing, especially since I was an avid reader. However, I didn’t become serious about it until eight years ago. When I moved, my commute became a two-hour train ride and reading on the train makes me nauseated, but writing doesn’t. So, I started writing, pages and pages of words, and that turned into a book, and then another, and… well, here I am.

Q: Why paranormal? What drew you to the genre?

AD: Christine Feehan, Ann Rice, Stephan King, RL Stein, Christopher Pike… I could go on. I love paranormal. When I was younger, it was paranormal horror, but when I discovered paranormal romance (at an older age) I was hooked. Paranormal is one of my favorite genres to write in because there are freedoms allowed that don’t exist in other genres, like historical. Plus, paranormal creatures are fascinating.

Q: For those who are new to your books, what is the story about?

AD: This addition to the Paranormal Tales from Firefly Island series is a set of paranormal horror tales which are connected by introductions through the newest patient admitted to the hospital, a young girl named Myra, who “accidentally” murdered her abusive aunt. Included in this collection are tales meant to send goosebumps scattering across your skin. My editor told me, she’d never look at chocolate the same way.

Q: How is this book different from the other books in the Firefly Island series?

AD: This collection is darker than the other books, since it focuses more on the terrifying side of the island. It’s less driven by romance, and more driven by horror, whereas the other books in the series have a central love story to accompany the supernatural flavor.

Q: What is a typical writing day like for you? What inspires you?

AD: I either write early in the morning or late at night. I have a day job with a chocolate company and my focus is on that during the day, as I work with numbers, and no, this job was not the inspiration for Devoured, but it did help with the details. When I write, I use noise-cancelling headphones with music playing, to prevent myself from distraction. Right now, the music playing is Christmas songs, however, when writing paranormal, I tend to lean more toward Imagine Dragons.

Q: What is your favorite part of being a published author?

AD: It’s amazing to see a book I’ve written in print. That still blows my mind.
