We recently chatted with Shifter Romance Author, Lulu M Sylvian. Satisfaction, the latest installment of the Legatum Series, was released this week.
The Legatum shifter romance saga follows a modern family of wolf shifters used to staying in the shadows. Protective, Legatum – Book One, introduces a world where shifter mythology and genetic science collide. If you love fated mates, family rivals, and wars between vampires and wolf shifters then this series is for you!
Fast forward to Satisfaction – Book 7, which continues to follow the Palatine family, who can trace their history back to the time of the founding of Rome. Descendants of Rhea Silvia, and the war god Mars, this modern family of wolf shifters is used to protecting their secrets and keeping to themselves. Now the science of genetics has caught up with their myth, and they can be traced through DNA testing. They must build a network of alliances so they can keep their secret safe from discovery, and protect their own.
ILVN: Hey Lulu, congratulations on the release of Satisfaction – Book 7 in the Legatum Series. Why don’t you introduce yourself.
LMS: My name is Lulu M. Sylvian and I write sexy hot paranormal and ridiculous male-stripper romances. I like paranormal worlds that are right around the corner from reality. Was that really a cat you saw out of the corner of your eye or something else?
ILVN: How long have you been writing or when did you start writing?
LMS: I started writing about ten years ago. I’ve been published for seven years. I’ve always had movies in my head, characters, moving pictures, all of that. It wasn’t until I decided to see if I could write those pictures that I even considered myself a writer. My husband knew long before I did. One year at least 10 years before I started writing he gave me notebooks and pens and said, “Go write.”
ILVN: Why paranormal/urban fantasy? What drew you to the genre?
LMS: It’s my favorite genre to read. I read a lot of everything, but paranormal romance is my absolute favorite. There is something yummy about a fierce dangerous character who is also protective and loyal and caring.
ILVN: What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?
LMS: The characters. They get in my head and are noisy with the stories they want told. I know that sounds borderline crazy, but let’s just say my imaginary friends have some great ideas.
ILVN: What’s your favorite type of paranormal creature and why?
LMS: I used to think I was a vampire girl. But the more I read, the more I realized I’m a romantic sucker for the shifters. Wolf shifters make the best book boyfriends.
ILVN: Tell us about your heroine/hero. What inspired her/his quirks and struggles?
LMS: Tori, the heroine, is that woman who is trying her hardest, but it seems like things don’t work out for her. She always ends up being the odd one out. Making friends is hard even though she is kind and sweet. She puts herself out there and hopes for the best. In Satisfaction, and with Les, she’s realizing she might not be able to keep on going the way she has been, it’s hard work. Something has to change. She knows she needs to prioritize herself, but she keeps trying.
ILVN: Would you and your main character get along?
LMS: I like to think I would get along with Tori. We both love a good cheesecake, and after all, we have very similar tastes in men. 😉
ILVN: Which of the characters do you relate to the most and why?
LMS: I try to make all of my characters relatable in some fashion. I relate more to Tori, the lead female, than I do Les who is a dessert chef and shifter. I get the same sense of awe when I drive up to a mansion, and I understand the absolute perfection of eating a really good cheesecake. And I definitely can relate to the struggle of a job that expects miracles and adds more tasks that are unrelated to my skill set. I have no idea what it’s like to work in a commercial kitchen, or be able to change my skin into that of a wolf.
ILVN: What is a significant way your book has changed since the first draft?
LMS: Satisfaction has undergone many changes since it was first written. It was originally created as a contemporary romance and released for a limited time to be part of the now defunct Kindle Worlds. (I think it was out for a month before Kindle Worlds was shut down.) The characters Les and Tori stuck with me, they weren’t happy their story was pulled. It took a while before I realized they were in the wrong world. Les is clearly a Palatine- a wolf shifter family, and Tori glows, only I didn’t see it — she’s Les’s mate, not mine 😉
Already located in Northern California’s wine country, I didn’t have to relocate them. I just needed a world shift and new characters to fit into the Legatum books. Fortunately, the right characters made themselves known and now Les and Tori are where they belong.
