On Wings of Blood Read Along | Week Three
Welcome back to the third week of our ON WINGS OF BLOOD read along, and I’m feeling a bit of the dreaded middle.
➡️ If you’re joining us late, you can still grab the October Bite Me Box featuring On Wings Of Blood by Briar Boleyn here.
Week Three Overview: Feeling the Mid-Book Slowdown
Things felt rather slow this week. We did get some progress. I guess. Blake protects Medra. Medra fights to believe he’s kind. They want each other. Regan is a bitch. Vampires suck. I mean…we’ve had very little progress in SO MANY plot points that it feels almost like we’re standing still.
Key Moments and Plot Movements
Medra at the Festival
The biggest one is Medra going to the festival with Blake’s adversary. Mocking him and rejecting him publicly. It’s on point for her. I like the way he reacted. But I feel like…there could have been more. He rejects Regan there, but all of it could have had more tension to it.
This does send her after Blake and has her eavesdropping on Regan about something she witnesses straight after. It was almost too easy.
Blake & Medra: Chemistry, Heat, and Miscommunication
Although what follows was sexy. It was nice to have them hating each other but being so drawn together that their sex was hot. I like that vibe. But their miscommunication is seeming a bit forced at this point.
We’ve got too many secrets and not enough of them revealed yet. We should have some answers and get new questions to create depth, and I’m just not getting that in this section. I hope some things get there in the last quarter.
Oh, and their first kiss while the fluffin is all injured? What the fuck? Seriously? Gross.
The Spell, the Dagger, and Medra’s Mother
Let’s talk about the spell to get Mom out of her head. It worked. Kind of. She’s in a dagger now, and still close by. It almost seems like a cop out. It should have worked or not but the half-step didn’t work for me. It’s too convenient.
Side Characters, Tension, and… More Tension
The Crush Among Friends
The crush amongst friends. I don’t know why this is giving me Hermione and Ron vibes, but it is. And it’s not quite working yet either. It might in the next bits, but it’s not for me right now. It just seems like unneeded tension.
The Uncle (Yes…That Trope)
The uncle. Gah, such a cliche power hungry dictator. He flip flops about his opinions, and everything he does is either wicked or self serving. The way he punishes Blake but rewards him at the same time is odd. I’m not a fan of this kind of character/trope in general.
The Serial Killer Subplot
We also got a serial killer of the mortals, one that might have attacked Medra, but yet another bit of tension that wasn’t needed in this book. It could have waited until book two.
Why the Tension Isn’t Landing Yet
The problem is that with so much going on, none of it are fleshed out enough to grab me and make me care. It needed some depth instead of just MORE.
I’m being a bit nitpicking, but after slogging through all of the exposition and world building, I wanted some action. I wanted some growth. Instead, I got a ton of little things that don’t add up to a lot of meaning in Medra’s life.
Blake’s POV: A Bright Spot
I have been liking Blake’s POV a bit more. But I feel like he should KNOW more. Much like Medra does.
