Ten Fae Characters You Should be Reading About

We Believe in Faeries! So, let’s explore some fun fae characters. Here are my top ten.

Siebold Adelbertsmiter (Zee) from the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs is Mercy’s former boss at the mechanic’s shop. Zee is also known as Loan Maclibuin: the Dark Smith of Drontheim, the seventh son of Windy Cap, the King of Norway. Often seen as grouchy, he performs small—and large—kindnesses to those he won’t admit to caring about. Centuries before, he was considered infamously fearsome. This may be due to his metal morphing abilities and immunity to iron, something highly in common with the fae.

Jenks from The Hollows Series by Kim Harrison is a pixy who joins Vampiric Charms, a freelance bounty-hunting business with a witch and a vampire. Highly comedic, he spits a lot of fiery and snarky remarks at Rachel, the protagonist. He makes for an excellent spy, saboteur, and electronics expert, and he has Rachel’s back. She helps his family by having them move into the church’s garden, giving his wife and fifty-four children a home and a purpose—safety, even as Jenks pays for it.

Boden Einarsson from Blood Phoenix: Rebirth by Alisha Costanzo. He’s a leprechaun, and he’s not the traditional kind. He is the tallest and fastest of his kind at seven-foot tall. From the Icelandic mound, he fled his home as a young man after the brutal death of his little sister, Alvilda, who was slaughtered by human invaders. Allied with ancient vampires, he imprints with a newly born vampire-phoenix hybrid and is ready to give anything to keep her safe.

Margaret Rogerson’s An Enchantment of Ravens features Rook, the Autumn King, and an ancient fairy of lore. Broody, beautiful, and often ridiculous, his hidden depths develop into a complicated character who is both scary and soft, distant but caring, and this makes keeping his position difficult. When he takes Isobel on an adventure to prove he has no weaknesses, he protects her and nestles in her bed as a raven as she paints portraits of the other dangerous fae folk.

Oak from The Stolen Heir by Holly Black is the prince and heir to Elfhame. Used to overthrow the throne as a child, he was supposed to be the high king—meant to be a means to an end for his adoptive father to control the throne, but his sister thwarts these plans in The Cruel Prince. As a new adult, he goes on a quest with the lost Queen of the Court of Teeth, and he is full of charm but also secretive. He misleads people and surprises them with his bravery and violence. The switch in him when he has to let that side of him out is cold and deadly.

The Fairy Godmother from Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher is a curse worker that could only provide the children she blessed with a weak or vague gift of good health. As she embarks on an adventure with one of her godchildren, she reveals that she practiced giving non-curses to animals in her youth and uses a baby chick to demonstrate this to the others in their group, cursing it to lead them to safety. If it couldn’t, it would die, which saddened the old woman.

The One and Only Crystal Druid by Annette Marie features Zak, the crystal druid in question—a formidable status. He has a dangerous and deadly reputation, not to mention the giant bounty on his head. A rogue, his specialty is in the dark arts and is a di-mythic, aka an alchemist and sorcerer. He comes back into Tori’s life after pretending to be her friend, after using her to escape his terrible life and leaving her to her own terrible fate to become a murderer.

Frost from the Merry Gentry series by Laurell K. Hamilton is absolutely crush-worthy. Born from the hoarfrost, he is the inspiration for the Jack Frost legend. Grumpy but loveable, he’s the first to be romantic with Merry after 800 years of celibacy. Overall, he’s as icy as his namesake, training himself to feel nothing for so long after being tortured by his sworn queen. But his emotional issues can’t completely hide how soft he really is. And he willingly sacrifices himself for Merry, forging a bond with her that has nothing to do with advancing the kingdom or gaining magic, he simply loves her.

Lucian, from the High Fae Academy series by Kaylin Peyerk, is a brooding and gorgeous spirit fae king with midnight plum eyes due to his dark past. Everything out of his mouth is a quip or condescending comment, but he is also highly intelligent and emotionally intuitive. He can literally wield the spirit of the living, like resurrecting those who aren’t severely maimed shortly after death. It’s forbidden to do so, but a few spirit fae are powerful enough to use mind control over weaker individuals. The best part about this character is his destiny; he falls in love with people and guides them to greatness, only to lose them in the end. And he’s passed this down to his son, Octavius.

Princess Orla from Frost by C.N. Crawford doesn’t play a giant role in the story, but she’s magnificent. Although she is blind and sick, she offers herself as the conduit for the Seelie throne and funnel magic back into a dying Faerie, even though this would mean her death. She aided Ava during the final trial, having sensed the magic another princess used to cheat and using her own to heal Ava.

Complicated. That’s pretty much how we can sum each of these characters up: difficult backstories, strength, danger, and cold competency.
