Mische’s journey through Breath with Asar is developing nicely. Well, you know, there’s a whole group, but honestly, most of the time, it doesn’t seem like it. They’re more tools to show us parts of Mische’s and Asar’s past, to aid in the fights and fill in the blanks and push the story along.
I am actually quite interested in one instance of this where Elias confronts Asar after a bloody woman tries to take them. Someone from their joint past in the House of Shadow. I hope we discover who she was to Asar before the end of the story, although it’s not a deal breaker if we don’t. Broadbent has me curious and questioning.
Okay, what I truly am loving during this second quarter is the growing attraction and attention between Mische and Asar. His anger at Elias striking her, his cupping her cheeks to wake her from her nightmare, his showing her how her friend found his way to his afterlife. And of course, how Asar helped him there.
Favorite moment is the one we’re left with before the next part: Psyche. And that’s Mische prodding out of him that he actually cares about what she thinks of him. The realization is cute.
What has me worried is how Miche’s family and friends died. Why she blames herself for it, and the kiss her Sun God gave her at the end as if he knows her will, her faith, is withering.
Mische seems to want to help Asar and his world more than she wants to help her Godly husband.
Which has me thinking about her past, how she’s to be left untouched, and how that will pan out for this couple—or almost couple, impending couple.
I think she perfectly gave us that foreshadowing from the not-a-wraith dead woman: “Or perhaps that’s why you would be so perfect for each other. A girl who can only love broken things, and a boy so broken he can only love what he cannot have. A perfect match.”
Is this lending itself to her being untouchable as the Sun God’s chosen? His wife? Or is it because he believes he’s not good enough for her? Or is it also a reference to what he wanted from the not-a-wraith?
So many mysteries. I hope we get some of the answers in the next section we read…or at least by the end of the next book planned for these two.
Alright, share your thoughts with me about their journey, the characters, the questions that you have in the comments below, and I’ll see you next week as we read up through page 298 (to Chapter Thirty-Two).
