The Wicked Sea Read Along Week Four: Betrayal, Death & Dark Secrets

The Wicked Sea Read Along Week Four

Welcome back to the fourth and final week of our The Wicked Sea by Jordan Stephanie Gray read along! And y’all…Y’ALL…this hit me in the feels!

The last stretch of this novel sent me over the edge. All of the betrayal, the character growth, the reveals! This book did exactly what I wanted it to do by not giving me what I wanted. You know what I mean?

The Wicked Sea’s Betrayals and Dark Magic

Okay, so we left off with them entering the sorcerer’s castle, being split up, seeing some of the fucked up magic and control over the people the sorcerer uses. It showcases the kind of sadistic person/being the sorcerer is.

When Zephyra starts hearing the whispers again, I have to suspect that they’re people or spirits the sorcerer has tortured and killed before Zephyra.

Zephyra and Arion Face the Final Reveals

And my god, what we learn about her, and him, and the entire gang has just gutted me. Everyone with her, other than Arion, was a traitor! What the heck?!

I mean, I get it story wise, I just feel bad for poor Zephyra. I feel bad for Arion, too, who was equally used and corralled into becoming a part of the sorcerer’s scheme. I’m guessing this is going to come back to bite that dick in the face.

And he’s Mortem, the god of death, and he’s freaking deranged. His obsession has made cruel, and it feels like he’s representative of the entitled man. How dare the one he loves not love him back? He must break her and own her. A dynamic I hate, but one that fuels this story so, so well.

Zephyra’s Goddess Reveal and Sacrifice

This also makes Zephyra the goddess Vila, which is so cool because of the way she talked about the goddess earlier in the story, how she taught Arion about her. Talk about proving she’s real…

I’m so glad to see the struggle she’s had throughout the entire book—about being selfish, sacrificing others for herself, the need to run—is the pinnacle of our climactic moment. She can’t save them all if she destroys the heart to kill Mortem/the sorcerer. So she can only sacrifice herself.

And she does.

Then, she dies.

Jacin’s Mystery and The Wicked Sea Cliffhanger

I don’t think this is permanent. You know, or we wouldn’t have a series, but watching her in the afterlife creates hope for what comes next.

Until we see Jacin on some kind of throne.

Who the fuck was Jacin before he was a human? The way she cut out his heart, like her goddess counterpart did to Mortem, to get free? Gruesome and telling of just how badly Mortem tortured her.

What the hell is going to happen between them now?

The Wicked Sea Finale Leaves Me Wanting More

See, now this is how to end a book one in a series. Leave me with too many questions and absolutely raving for the next one.

But we’re going to have to wait. Aren’t we?

No read along next week, but we’ll update you soon on what’s coming next!

Until then, happy reading!
