The Wicked Sea Read Along Week Three
Welcome back to week three of our read along for The Wicked Sea by Jordan Stephanie Gray. And we have hit some serious intensity!
We come back into the story with Vesper trying to kill her and the discovery that her sister, Eos, was killed because Zephyra ran away. But when they move into the open water, a giant squid attempts to eat the two of them and Gavriall until, of course, Arion comes to save them.
Only for us to understand that Vesper made a deal with the sorcerer that imprisoned Zephyra to bring her back.
Zephyra and Arion Face New Dangers
And if action isn’t building fast enough, the group gets nabbed by a net and they’re captured by a demi-god princess.
With them split apart, we get to see some growth between the pairings: Arion and Gavriall, and Zephyra and Vesper. They start to work together if not trust each other yet. I really like this growth as we build for what I assume is a few more books in the continuation of this adventure.
Because of the way this is building, I suspect we’re going to end with the cliffhanger at the end that leaves them all in peril. My best guess is that Zephyra is captured again, suffering until the come back. Perhaps with another deal struck because Arion dies, and they’re tied together.
Zephyra and Arion’s Relationship Deepens
This stems from their building relationship, as she admits the torture she went through, the difficulties of escaping, the YEARS of her attempted escape, and of course, her reasons for making the bargain to begin with.
I really wonder what happened to Jacin. How the sorcerer used him against her. Is he trapped in the castle, too?
Zephyra’s Trauma and Arion’s Dark Past
And we get more of Arion’s torture guised as training, how he had to kill someone because they said so, and he doesn’t even know the man’s name. But he does remember that the man had daughters. I like how this pulls out the warlock’s humanity.
That they keep pulling out the darkest parts of each other and accepting them anyways. Especially in their sex scene, how the only reason they can trust and indulge the way they do is because they’ve seen those parts, and they still make each other happy.
Revenge, Redemption, and the Future of The Wicked Sea
But Zephyra calls it in the last chapter. What kind of life can they have afterward? They still have a lot to go through before they can get there I bet.
What Will Happen in The Wicked Sea Finale?
What do you think? Are we going to be traumatized this next week as we finish The Wicked Sea and our read along? Or are we going to get a silver of the revenge, redemption, and happiness we crave at the end of a story?
I’m betting on the former. Just saying.
Until next week, y’all, happy reading!
