The Video Games

The Witcher was adapted into a series of fantasy action role-playing games developed by CD Projekt Red. The main series began in 2007 with the release of The Witcher, and concluded with 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.  The latter is the most successful game in the series selling over 50 million copies. As well as the main three games in the series, there are two expansion packs and three spin-off games.  The main titles in the series are as follows:

The Witcher

The Witcher blurs the line between good and evil in a world where moral ambiguity reigns. It is a harsh world where nothing is black or white, right or wrong, often forcing one to choose between the lesser of two evils to advance. You become the hero in a narrative, defined by your actions, which brings together story telling and action. Assume the role of a white-haired witcher named Geralt, a renowned monster-slayer-for-hire and master swordsman with superhuman strength and reflexes. While trying to regain his lost memory, Geralt unwillingly becomes involved in a power struggle that could change the world.   Available on PC only.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

Assassins Of Kings continues the adventures of the Medieval monster hunter for hire, Geralt of Rivia, and his search for the truth of his forgotten past and the treachery surrounding him.   Available on PC and Xbox 360.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The most successful title in The Witcher Games Series.  This sweeping open world has you again playing as Geralt of Rivia and becoming a monster slayer for hire embarking on an epic journey to track down the child of prophecy, a living weapon capable of untold destruction.

Available on: PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Click here to view on Amazon >>

The Witcher On Netflix

In 2019 Netflix released the long anticipated TV adaption to the Witcher Books Series, available to stream on it’s platform. The first season consists of eight episodes and is based on The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, which are collections of short stories that precede the main Witcher saga.  It stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Freya Allan as Ciri and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg.   The show initially follows Geralt of Rivia, Crown Princess Ciri, and the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg at different points of time, exploring formative events that shaped their characters, before eventually merging into a single timeline detailing the invaders from Nilfgaard.  On it’s debut The Witcher was the third most in demand streaming original (only behind Stranger things and The Mandolorian).  The success of the TV show also increased sales in the games series by a large margin.

Response to the series:

The Author himself Andrzej Sapkowski has seemed pleased with the Netflix adaption of his books. “I was more than happy with Henry Cavill’s appearance as The Witcher. He’s a real professional. Just as Viggo Mortensen gave his face to Aragorn (in The Lord of the Rings), so Henry gave his to Geralt — and it shall be forever so.”

The series was met with mostly positive reviews from critics. “If you’re looking for an original dark fantasy with some horror elements, some bare skin and plenty of blood and gore (and monsters) look no further.”  Erik Kain of Forbes

A second eight-episode season is set to be released in late 2021.  Filming has just been wound up and we are hotly anticipating it’s release!
