This Enemies-to-Lovers Fantasy Book Has Me SCREAMING | Week 1 Read Along Reactions
Enemies-to-Lovers Fantasy Romance: Week One Read Along for The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy

Welcome to Week One of our fantasy romance read along! This August, we’re diving into Brigitte Knightley’s The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy, the featured book in our July Bite Me Box. If you’re a fan of slow burn enemies-to-lovers, witty banter, and morally gray main characters, you’re in the right place.

We’re covering Chapters 1 through 5, and whew—there’s already a lot to unpack.

That Delicious Hate-to-Love Energy

The tension between Aurienne and Osric is everything.

The animosity doesn’t just come from personal slights—it’s rooted in cultural and ideological differences. They’re both clever, powerful, and constantly trying to one-up each other. And the insults? Chef’s kiss. There’s no romance yet, but the underlying chemistry is building with every sarcastic jab and sharp glance.

Osric clearly knows he’s attractive and plays it up with a charming arrogance. Aurienne isn’t fazed—she’s all business, sharp as a dagger, and clearly not here for his nonsense. The way they notice the little things about each other—without acknowledging it outright—is a brilliant bit of tension-building that promises an epic payoff.

Predictions & Foreshadowing

Let’s make some early predictions. I have a strong feeling that:

  • Aurienne and Osric will find a cure for his fatal disease—because this is fantasy romance, and we’re rooting for the HEA.

  • The massive 20 million gold donation he gave for her help—and plans to steal back—will definitely come back around. It feels like the perfect “third-act breakup” catalyst.

  • Aurienne’s inner fire, dulled by years of control, might reignite as she’s drawn into Osric’s chaos. I love watching characters break out of their emotional armor.

Style Notes

Knightley’s narrative voice is playful and cheeky—sometimes summarizing conversations instead of showing them. While I usually prefer more direct dialogue, the voice adds to the overall charm.

One thing I didn’t love? Emphasizing words by turning them into proper nouns. It’s a quirky stylistic choice, but it pulled me out of the story a bit. Still, the distinct character voices more than make up for it, and I’m very excited to keep reading.

What’s Next?

Next week we’ll be reading up to Chapter 11, page 172.
Make your predictions in the comments—Will Osric steal back the money? Will Aurienne’s icy exterior melt?
