Three Magical Fae Anime To Watch
If you’re new to anime but a veteran when it comes to fantasy or paranormal romance books, these three magical fae shows are the perfect way to ease yourself into a lifetime anime obsession! They’re the tamest but most interesting series involving or centering around fae, fairies, and magic!
The Ancient Magus’ Bride
For the first of Three Magical Fae Anime to Watch, we have a paranormal slice-of-life show!
For those who love stories that showcase the lovable monster male main character, this show is calling to you. After being ousted by relatives and family, a young woman is sold at auction to a seven-foot immortal mage with a smooth animal skull for a head. He’s terrifying, ancient, and…kind? Elias Ainsworth is more than she bargains for, taking them on a sweet slice-of-life adventure weaving the romantic storyline of a human girl and her keeper.
People warn the woman of the great evil she’d been bought by only to be ignored. While she isn’t dumb, the female main character is a great judge of character and firmly believes in his good nature. The two set off on a wild adventure fighting demons, meeting magical creatures, and avoiding certain death. The comic relief stems from the FMC being a magnet for horrible luck.
Honestly, this is one of my favorite anime of all time. It has a stunning art style, great writing, heart-wrenching moments, and ones of precious joy. If you need something to warm your heart up, check this series out. You won’t regret it.
Seven Deadly Sins
For the second of Three Magical Fae Anime to Watch, we have a fantasy action show!
As a serial anime watcher, when people ask what fantasy anime to start with, Seven Deadly Sins is the first one that comes to mind. This one has great, hilarious banter with a surprisingly deep story hovering in the background.
The main characters of the story are, unsurprisingly, seven magical beings who each represent the seven capital vices of the universe. They’re the strongest knights of all time once at the top of their field before being framed for murder. Now, fifteen years later when darkness and demons threaten the Earth, the leader of their rag-tag band of rejects sets out with a princess of the land to reform the Seven Deadly Sins and save the world.
One of the main characters, King, the Sin of Sloth, is the Faire Forest King. His power is known as Disaster which allows him to control the molecules of life and death. He has a long, complicated history of bloodshed, loss, and pain just like most of the characters fleshed out in this show. It makes for in-depth narratives spanning between one season and the next.
While die-hard anime fans might ward others off of this show because of the animation style changes, I think it’s perfect for someone dipping their toe in the water. There’s just enough intrigue, witty humor, and silliness to make it a fun, crazy ride.
Sword Art Online Fairy Dance Arc
For the third of Three Magical Fae Anime to Watch, we have a fantasy video game-inspired show!
Imagine being thrust into a world in which you could choose the fairy race you’d like to be…sounds pretty sweet, right?
Sword Art Online is a classic. The premise follows a group of people who become stuck in a virtual reality fantasy game for years on end and are forced to survive. The main character, Kirito, was a beta tester for the game and is extremely well-versed in the fighting style, levels, and various difficulties that come with gameplay. There are many seasons of SAO that all follow different genres of video games played in virtual reality, the one I recommend for fae fantasy fans is season two.
Our main characters are transported into the dangerous world of Alfheim Online with several different factions of fairies. From those who wield fire magic and ancient blades to those faster than the speed of light and one with the wind, this fantastical world will blow you away. It has romance, action, adventure, found family, and lots of comical banter.
Which fairy race would you choose?
Spriggan – Masters of illusion and treasure-seeking who prefer to wear black.
Imp – Masters of the night with bat-like senses and vision.
Undine – Healers and masters of the water element.
Cait Sith – Beast tamers with improved eyesight who sport a set of cat ears & a tail.
Pooka – Magic users who spin tunes to confuse and attack enemies while supporting their teammates.
Leprechaun – A race of fae known for their blacksmithing skill and mechanical appearance.
Salamander – The largest and strongest race with the ability to control the element of fire.
Sylph – The fasters race of fae who control the art of the wind.
Gnome – The largest fae race that controls the power of the earth element.
I myself would love to load into the game as a Sylph or an Undine, both are right up my alley. Let me know your answers in the comments!
Well, that’s all for this week from me! I hope you try out this new medium of entertainment. There are a lot of parallels in storytelling between anime, manga, and books.
