Interview with A.L. Knorr:
Q: Hi A.L. Knorr! Tell us about your publishing journey. Did you always want to be an author?
ALK: Yes, since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to tell stories. My mom taught me to read when I was three and after that it was go time. I dreamed of being an author my whole life but other doors opened and I had careers as a dancer and as a marketing professional first. The author door opened in 2015 and I never looked back. It took me a year to write my first book but I loved the journey and it launched to great feedback which encouraged me to keep going. The universe I created with that first book has continued to grow and grow. I have more stories and ideas inside me than I could ever write in a lifetime, so I feel thankful that I’ve found a career and readers I love.
Q: What’s your favorite type of paranormal creature and why?
ALK: Mermaid! I love the ocean and nautical history. When I was young I fantasized about being a mermaid and being free to explore the world’s bodies of water unencumbered by SCUBA gear and without danger of drowning. A mermaid seemed the perfect way to do that and I daydreamed about visiting the Titanic and other shipwrecks, sunken cities and interesting oceanic features.
Q: For those who are new to your books, what is the story about?
ALK: My Elemental Origins series opens with 4 girlfriends just heading into their summer vacations. Each girl is a unique character with unique circumstances, but they all go away for the summer to a different exotic location. They remain in contact via texting, but each girl is swept up into a unique supernatural world, each one becomes a powerful elemental, which is why the series is called Elemental Origins and thus: Born of Water, Born of Fire, Born of Earth, Born of Aether, Born of Air, and the final book which brings them all together in an explosive finale called simply The Elementals. Readers liked this series so much that I’ve gone on to create trilogies for each girl, and I’m currently launching the Fire series, which will be longer than the others, at five books, this Sept. It follows Saxony Cagney, the fire mage, as she goes to a secret school for fire magi on the coast of England near the cliffs of Dover. Yes, I went to Dover, and yes, was totally inspired by the location and setting. I can’t wait to share this series with readers.
Q: Tell us about your heroine. What inspired her quirks and struggles?
ALK: When the reader first meets Saxony, she’s a 16 year old au pair at the beginning of a summer spent in Venice. She’s a Canadian from the east coast, which means she’s polite and compassionate, but she’s also got a sassy streak. She’s fearless in some ways, but worries about her family. She would do anything for her friends. She’s a bit of a flirt, the popular girl, but she second guesses herself just as much as anyone else. When she receives the ‘fire’ (she becomes a fire mage) from one of the little boys she looked after in Venice, it turns her whole world upside down and exposes her to a supernatural reality she never knew existed. Saxony is just one of a whole cast of characters from my Elemental Origins series, but she’s a strong favorite, and her newest series—Arcturus Academy—launches this Sept 30 and will take readers on the wildest ride I think I’ve ever concocted.
Q: What is your favorite part of being a published author?
ALK: Oh, the readers, for sure! I feels so blessed when a reader reaches out to tell me how much they enjoyed something I wrote. In a way, reading someone’s writing is a form of telepathy. The author describes what they see in their imagination and a reader takes it in and gets swept away on the same adventure, even years after its been written. Creating stories is hard work but its so enjoyable and fulfilling that I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Q: Where can our readers find you? (Social media, website, etc.)
Thank you, A.L. Knorr!
