Midnight Captive by Arial Burnz is FREE today….

Midnight CaptiveMAC DOUGAL has lived a dangerous life being the adopted daughter of vampire Broderick “Rick” MacDougal, so she had no choice but to learn to fight in order to protect herself. However, such behavior is hardly desirable in a dutiful wife who’s supposed to embroider and run a household. This aggressive side of her behavior should be easy enough to hide from her betrothed…shouldn’t it?

After being away at fencing school for seven years, JAMES KNIGHTLY has returned as a master swordsman, ready to captain his own ship and finally wed his childhood sweetheart, Cailin MacDougal. What he finds waiting for him is a dagger-toting hellion for a bride, an immortal father-in-law, and an enemy bent on extracting revenge by threatening the family James holds most dear–the MacDougals.

BRODERICK MAC DOUGAL is lured away from his family with the promise of–at last–learning a way to protect those he loves from his clan enemy, Angus Campbell. Broderick knows he’s headed for a trap, but the bait is too tempting to resist…and he unravels the beginning of a prophecy that will lead to redemption for all vampires. The cost of such redemption, though, may be the very soul of the woman he would die for…his wife, Davina.

Midnight Conquest is the first book in the series and is currently available for $0.99

midnight conquestMasked in a Gypsy guise, Broderick MacDougal hides his vampiric identity while seeking to destroy the man who slaughtered his family. When an old Clan rival ensnares Broderick in a trap using an enticing widow, he is compelled to discover if she is bait or an accomplice, and the cinnamon-haired beauty is his next conquest.
Widow of an abusive husband, Davina Stewart-Russell clings to the only image that gave her strength during those dark times–the Gypsy rogue who stole her heart as a youth. After nine years, she is finally face-to-face with him again, but reality clashes with fantasy as she is confronted with Broderick's passionate pursuit.

When Davina's past returns to haunt her, Broderick is forced to reveal a dark secret worse than anything Davina thought possible. The challenge before them has fatal risks and neither of them is prepared for the sacrifices expected for the sake of eternal love.

Our interview with Arial:

Welcome to I Love Vampire Novels, Arial

First, let me say thanks to the I Love Vampire Novels group for this amazing opportunity to share my books with people who love vampires as much as I do! I don’t care how much agents and publishers are saying people are sick of vampires. This group proves we’re not! Huzzah!

Tell us about your book/series. What makes it/them worth reading?

This series starts in the early 1500s of Scotland and will finish in the 21st Century. My driving force for writing the Bonded By Blood Vampire Chronicles was the neglected historical background of vampire characters. So much of today’s vampire literature takes place in contemporary times, when many vampires are hundreds or even thousands of years old and weary of living for so long. I wanted to show a character who was at or near the beginning of his transformation, when being immortal was exciting. And I do love to put a twist on a traditional tale, so I take full advantage of creating these twists throughout the books.

One thing I LOVE about a series is the overarching story that usually takes place in the background of the individual storylines. This six-book series is no different. There are plenty of puzzle pieces to pick up along the way for the diligent reader who loves to solve a mystery. New things are always developing as my husband and I plan the details of each storyline as we go along. So much fun! (Yes, I’m one of those very lucky writers whose spouse is not only 100% supportive, but helps me brainstorm my plots.)

Midnight Captive (Book 2) is Cailin MacDougal’s story and takes place seventeen years after Midnight Conquest (Book 1), Broderick and Davina’s story. At the beginning of Book 1, Davina is pregnant with Cailin as a result of her abusive marriage. Her husband goes off to war and Davina becomes a widow with a toddler when she meets Broderick. (Don’t worry, I haven’t given away any spoilers!) Readers don’t have to read the first book to enjoy the second, but those who have read them out of order said they couldn’t wait to read Book 1 to see how Rick and Davina met and what triggered the prophecy.

How long have you been writing and what inspired you to do it?

I’ve been penning stories in one form or another since second grade, but Anne Rice was my inspiration for taking writing seriously in my twenties. Unfortunately, I had been dragged into technical and corporate writing, which paid the bills. And due to the curve balls thrown at me during my life, I’ve only been able to pursue creative writing as a career just four years ago.

What do you think causes people’s enduring fascination with vampires?

Honestly…sex and immortality. Vampires are tremendously sexy…biting necks, seducing people and the like. And then there’s the promise of living forever. However, I think we also like the darker side of their nature since it’s something we can all relate to on one level or another. They’re hunters, having death as a bedmate since they are so intimate with it. In my stories, I really capitalize on the metaphor that vampires symbolize the choices we make in life. I’m fond of saying, “We don’t always choose the life we live, but our lives are a direct result of the choices we make.” This is so very true for my characters.

What are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?

Since I’m entrenched in vampires all the time and have been for 30 years, I try to take a break with fantasy literature every now and then, which is the other genre I write. I’m reading Patrick Rothfuss’s second book in his Kingkiller Chronicles – The Wise Man’s Fear. The Name of the Wind was the first book. It was HUGE…but I could NOT put it down! He’s a wonderful writer. I highly recommend him if you love a deeply woven fantasy tale with endearing characters.

The vampires are attacking! Grab the first thing you see to your right and hit them with it! What was it? And how do you think you did in the ensuing fight?

I grab my pod cast microphone (I do audio book recording, too)…but I wouldn’t dare hit a vampire with my mic. Can’t risk damaging it. I could actually get a good interview from said attacking vampire if I play my cards right!

The aforementioned vampire attack didn’t go so well and you were bitten by the vampire…now what?

Well, in my vampire stories, it doesn’t mean I turn into one. Too easy! So, I’m sitting at my desk, dribbling a little of my blood into a cup from my arm (where I feigned off the attack)–my bribe for the vampire to do an interview. As I bandage my wound, he’s sitting back, sipping the cup with one hand and holding the mic with the other, starting to tell me his life story.

In the event of a zombie apocalypse what item would you make sure you took with you to your underground safety bunker? (we will presume that your family are already safely in the bunker!)

My husband and I are very prepared for this. We already have our bunker stocked with homemade dehydrated and canned foods, our Omega Gardens ( with plenty of seeds to grow food indoors, water and propane. We also have plenty of weapons and ammunition and a generator with back-up solar power. The one thing I would make sure I have with me as I run into the bunker would be my computer. Zombies or not, I have to keep writing! I’ll go crazy if I don’t.

You are planning an awesome dinner party. Which 3 celebrities/fictional characters/historical figures (past or present) would you add to your guest list?

Holy bananas, this is a tough one! Who WOULDN’T I invite? Only three, huh? Probably Patrick Rothfuss so we could collaborate on great stories, Oprah Winfrey so she could recommend my books in her book club (I just need her to mention them ONCE and I’d get to the top of bestseller list so much faster!), and Mel Brooks because he would keep us laughing the whole time. I met him once…he’s a lovely man!

Can you give us five random facts about yourself?

1. I’m a Desert Storm Veteran (Mar 1987 – Dec 1991) – US Air Force, stationed in England, Germany and Turkey

2. I’m an Aries

3. I have a black cat named Nicodemus

4. I’m the eldest of four siblings

5. I’m from Chicago

Right now, I’m initially launching my books through Amazon, but later they’ll be available through most online retailers (e.g., Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Diesel – they can buy Book 1 at these retailers now). Readers can either visit my website at where I have links OR my Amazon Author Page

Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?

First, I’d like to say thank you sooooo much for this wonderful opportunity to meet all of you!!! I look forward to future interactions. {{Virtual hugs and waves}} I LOVE to hear from readers, so please don’t hesitate to visit my website and drop me a line or leave a comment. I just posted a bunch of fun extras – audio files of pronunciations and the Hebrew incantations used in the books, a map of the Scottish Clans featured in the storylines, and behind-the-scenes information. There’s also interviews with Broderick MacDougal posted on the site. What a rogue! He LOVES to interact with people and he’s such a flirt, so don’t miss out on leaving him a comment. 😉
Secondly, Midnight Conquest – Book 1 will be 99¢ until the end of April to celebrate the release of Midnight Captive – Book 2 which is FREE for today’s promo, and Midnight Hunt – Book 3 is planned for release in July! (*crossing fingers I meet deadlines*) There’s a sneak peak for Book 3 at the end of Book 2. Grab those hankies! It’s a TEAR-jerker. 😉

And lastly, I’ll be holding a book release party in April or May (date not yet determined) for Book 2, so if anyone lives in the Los Angeles area, make sure you visit my website for details on the party so you can get an invite. I’ll be giving away vampire-themed goodies and there will be other authors attending. You don’t want to miss it! I have to find a bigger venue this year. We packed out last year’s party. We MIGHT be have a party for Book 3 in Las Vegas during the Romance Novel Convention…but not sure. Subscribe to my blog or LIKE my Facebook page and you’ll be notified of the dates and statuses for the parties.

Again, thank you so much for having me as a guest. I can’t thank you enough!

About the author:

Arial Burnz has been an avid reader of both paranormal and fantasy fiction for over thirty years. With bedtime stories filled with unicorns, hobbits, dragons and elves, she had no choice but to craft her own tales, penning to life the many magical creatures roaming her mind and dreams. And with a romantic husband who's taught her the meaning of true love, she's helpless to weave romance into her tales. Now she shares them with the world. Arial Burnz lives in Rancho Cucamonga, California, with her husband (a.k.a. her romance novel hero)—who is also a descendent of Clan MacDougal—along with their dog and two cats.
