Better Off Dead by HP Mallory
From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author, HP Mallory, Comes BETTER OFF DEAD, the first book in the Lily Harper series!
If there’s such a thing as luck, Lily Harper definitely doesn’t have it.
Killed in a car accident before it’s her time to go, Lily learns that the hereafter isn’t exactly what she hoped it might be.
First, there’s AfterLife Enterprises, the company responsible for sorting out the recently dead and sending them on their way to the Kingdom, (aka happily ever after,) or to the Underground City, (not so happily ever after.) Learning that Lily’s death was indirectly their fault (her guardian angel, Bill, was MIA during her accident and was one of their employees,) Afterlife Enterprises offers Lily the chance to live again. But, as with most things involving the afterlife, beware the fine print. Most notably, Lily will have to become a soul retriever, venturing into the bowels of the Underground City to retrieve souls that were mistakenly sent there by Afterlife Enterprises during a Y2K computer glitch.
Second, there’s angel Bill. As if risking her second life in the Underground City wasn’t enough, Lily’s guide to the Underground is none other than her incompetent, alcoholic, womanizing guardian angel, Bill, the antithesis of anything wholesome. With only Dante’s Inferno and Bill to help her in her quest, Lily’s future isn’t looking bright.
Finally, there’s the legendary bladesmith, Tallis Black. As Scottish as his kilts and heavy brogue, Tallis Black is a centuries-old Celt who, for reasons only known to him, offers to train Lily and act as her escort into the depths of the Underground City. Dark, brooding and definitely dangerous, Lily knows she shouldn’t trust Tallis, but she also can’t deny her attraction to him.
Between soul retrieving in hell, dealing with Bill and trying to figure out what’s in it for Tallis, Lily wonders if maybe she would’ve just been better off dead.
Welcome to I Love Vampire Novels. Firstly, can you tell us about your new series?
Thanks for having me! Yes, my new series centers around the character of Lily Harper, a woman who dies before it's her time to go because her guardian angel was slacking on the job. Consequently, she is offered the chance to live again by AfterLife Enterprises (think the DMV of the afterlife). But as with most things involving the hereafter, beware the fine print! Fine print = becoming a soul retriever in the bowels of the Underground City to save souls mistakenly sent there during a Y2K computer glitch. And her guides? None other than her alcoholic, womanizing, inept guardian angel, Bill, and Tallis Black. Tallis, a two thousand year old Celtic Druid, also happens to be sexiness on a stick. Dark, brooding and definitely dangerous, Lily can't help her attraction to him although she also can't figure out why he wants to help her in the first place!
The book is a whirlwind tour of romance, comedy and fantasy all rolled into one!
How long have you been writing and what inspired you to do it?
I've really been writing all my life but full time writing for about three years. I think I must have been born with a pen in my mouth because I've always wanted to be a writer–for as long as I can remember.
What are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?
Actually, I'm in between books at the moment! And, no, I wouldn't recommend it! LOL
Can you also tell us about your other series? What makes them worth reading?
My other series are also in the world of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. The first, the Jolie Wilkins series, is about a witch who learns she's the Queen of the Underworld. Throw in a love triangle between an English warlock and a rake of a vampire and it's a bumpy ride for Jolie!
My other series, the Dulcie O'Neil series, is about a fairy in law enforcement and is also healthy with sexy men, vamps included!
What do you think causes people’s enduring fascination with vampires?
I think it's the fine line between fear and desire. I mean, there really isn't anything sexier than an incredibly powerful male creature who is, at the same time, extremely sexual and…hungry! LOL
How amazing is it being a NY Times bestselling author? How did it change your life when that happened?
I can't even begin to tell you what an amazing accomplishment and feeling it was for me when I hit the NY times list. I actually hit it twice with two of my books from my Jolie Wilkins series. Hitting the list had always been a huge goal of mine and I was incredibly happy and proud of myself!
In the event of a zombie apocalypse what item would you make sure that you took with you to your underground safety bunker? (we will presume that your family are already safely in the bunker!)
My computer so I could continue writing my books and not miss my deadlines! LOL (Hey, you never know, maybe zombies are into reading about hot mystical creatures too!)
Can you give us three, scandalous facts about yourself you wouldn’t even want your own mother to know about?
LOL! I don't know how scandalous I am! Instead, I save the intrigue for my books. I'm more like Holly Homemaker! : )
Where can readers find your books?
Pretty much everywhere. Online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and in bookstores!
