Our interview with D N Simmons, the author of The Knights of Darkness Chronicles

Firstly, tell us about your book/series.

The Knights of the Darkness Chronicles is an urban-fantasy/PNR series featuring vampires and shifters living openly with humans. It centers around a group of humans and supernaturals and their lives intertwine as they face one obstacle after another that brings them closer together. It’s dark, sexy, packed with action, romance, sexy, humor and originality. You won’t find another series quite like it in any genre dealing with the paranormal. I wanted to give readers something truly unconventional and unique to delve into. I love vampires and shifters and with so many books out there involving to two species, I knew I had to “Bring It”, so to speak.

What inspired you to become a writer?

I wanted to entertain people. I have a lot of fun writing stories that take the reader on an adventure and they laugh, cry, gasp, sigh, snicker and even blush. That’s what it’s all about, really.

What is your relationship with your characters?

We have an understanding. As long as I’m true to them, they’ll guide me in the right direction.

Do you have a favorite?

I don’t. I love each and every character for their unique personalities.

Is there one that you find a bit more difficult?

Nope. I have a very good understanding of each one, so it’s very easy for me to write for them.

Is there anything that you find challenging about being a writer?

When I first started, it was editing. But with the help of my editor I have now and learning new writing techniques, the process has gotten much easier and I’ve gained a lot more confidence.

Is there one question that you wish that you would be asked in an interview? If so, what is it and what’s the answer?

Pick one character and ask them how they view the world they live in.  I’ll pick Natasha, one of the main human female characters in my series. “I find it a little more frightening now than I did before I knew vampires and shape-shifters were real. I remember fantasizing about being bitten or becoming the lover of a vampire and it was exhilarating to imagine that as a possibility when I thought it’d never be one. But now, everything is different. My life has been completely flipped upside down. In some ways, I’m really happy with the changes, I love being able to help people. I’m also finding myself entangled in a very hot and heavy relationship with not one, but two sexy vampires. The bad part is there seems to be danger around every corner! I never have a boring moment anymore, I can say that with confidence.

What do you think causes people’s enduring fascination with vampires?

They’re amazing creatures. Think about it, you can have so much fun with how you want to create them. Are they going to be hideous monsters that stalk and terrorize you? Drain you of all life as they savagely mutilate your body? Or are they going to seduce you; take you into their beds and bring you to heights of ecstasy you never knew existed? Vampires are dangerous beings capable of so much violence or tenderness or both. I prefer the ones that have a gentle side but if you cross them, they’ll rip you apart and not think twice about it.

Are you also an avid reader? What are you reading at the moment?

I am.  At the moment, I’m all tied up with my new novel, so I don’t have much time for pleasure reading. I did enjoy The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa.

The vampires are attacking! Grab the first thing you see to your right and hit them with it! What was it? And how do you think you did in the
ensuing fight?

Unfortunately, my only weapon for defense was my remote control.  If we’re dealing with vampires from the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles, then I’m probably someone’s meal right now and I never even got the chance to defend myself. I wonder what I did to piss them off that they would attack me? I’m pro-vampire! I campaigned for them! Those bloodsucking bastards! LOL

The afore mentioned vampire attack didn’t go so well and you were bitten by the vampire…now what?

Well, hopefully my charm, wit and creativity convince them that the world needs authors to give the readers what they want and they keep me alive… or turn me. 😀 *Giggle* I hope they turn me, who doesn’t want to live forever?

In the event of a zombie apocalypse what item would you make sure that you took with you to your underground safety bunker? (we will presume that your family are already safely in the bunker!)

By the way, I LOVE the Walking Dead. Okay, on to my answer. Assuming my underground safety bunker as tons of water and plenty of can goods you can just pop open without a can opener. Guns, bullets and swords would be necessary as well as antibiotics and pain medication that can reduce fevers.  The only thing I’d have to make sure I’d take with me is toilet paper or wet wipes.. people don’t think about that until you need it. LOL.

You are planning an awesome dinner party. Which 3 celebrities/fictional characters/historical figures (past or present) would you add to your
guest list?

Darian Alexander, the master vampire from my series. He’s really an interesting character I love to ask him all sorts of questions. Jesus Christ – oh the questions I would ask! Last but definitely not least, Michael Jackson.

Can you give us five random facts about yourself?

I’m addicted to Guitar Hero
I’m a wrestling fan
I love to watch Anime of all genres.
I love music of all genres.
I’m terribly afraid of spiders

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Make sure you do your research. Pair up with a great editor because even if your story concept is grand, you have to deliver it in a way the draws readers in, not push them away. Be able to take criticism and be open to making changes. It only makes you a better writer.

Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?

I thank you all for showing interest in an unknown author and giving my novels a chance. I promise to create the best stories I can so that when you pick up a D.N. Simmons book, you can have confidence knowing I gave you everything I had and it was damn worth it.
