First Impressions
Waking up in a pile of dead bodies? Intriguing and gruesome—I love it. Then, immediately being held captive? I’m here for it. The onset of the enemies-to-lovers tension? Bring it on.
Still, I found myself sighing at moments. The angst is there, but both characters feel a bit young—maybe it’s the mix of old-timey and modern language. It pulled me out of the dialogue a little.
Medra’s Character
Medra is feisty (major bonus), and we know she’s a princess, but I’m craving more about her old life and sacrifice. What truly happened before she was thrown into this vampire world?
I wanted less trust and naivety, more grit from her right away. That’s just my preference for strong female leads—but I suspect she’ll toughen up fast. Especially when it comes to Regan. I caught Regan’s fake niceties immediately and was surprised Medra fell for them.
The Academy Dynamics
Medra holding her own in that sparring match? Chef’s kiss. Even if her opponent wanted to murder her, she still came out on top, and the professor handled it well. But Blake…what’s going on with him?
His dynamic with Regan is tense, and I can’t tell if he knew what she had planned. Obviously, this is Medra and Blake’s story, and I’m intrigued to see how their enemies-to-lovers arc unfolds.
The dragon-climbing scene threw me a bit, though. Why didn’t the headmaster intervene? He doesn’t seem on Medra’s side at all. Still, she’s gaining allies, and I’m curious how they’ll shape the story ahead.
Pacing & World-building
Overall, I’m enjoying how the story’s progressing—but I do have some gripes. There’s some info-dumpiness hidden in dialogue and lectures that dragged on a bit. I skimmed those. I’m not a big world-building girl—give me character and action and I’m good.
Also, the level of description borders on excessive. I don’t need every detail of a room or outfit—but that’s just my personal taste. Thankfully, skimming helps.
Predictions & Discussion
Any predictions? I think Medra’s going to get the best of Regan at some point. Her friends will become key players, and I’m especially watching her two professors who seem to have her back.
Mostly, I’m here for the romance—for their hatred to simmer, then shift. And I can’t wait for Medra’s past to be revealed.
Oh, and her mother being in her head? Such an intriguing twist!
